MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

Scottish Country Dance Couple

The Branch normally does not ask newcomers to pay any fees for their first few visits while they decide whether they like Scottish Country Dancing or not; but once one has decided to continue, one should become a member of the RSCDS and of the Branch where one dances regularly. Membership in the Branch and the RSCDS is open to persons over the age of 16.

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is the ruling body for Scottish Country Dancing throughout the world. It is based in Edinburgh and its efforts assure consistency in the description of the dances and figures, adoption of new dances, teaching, and music. This consistency allows a dancer to join the dance anywhere in the world with confidence and ease.

Dues for 2007 - 2008:

There are two components of the dues: One, a membership fee in the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and the other, dues for the Branch where one dances.

There are two ways to pay:

1. Sessional payments
The treasurers preferred form of payment:
- Fall session        (September - December),  $90      $25 RSCDS dues, $65 Branch dues
- Winter session  (January - May),                    $90      all Branch

The Fall session fee includes the $25 RSCDS membership fee.
If you start and join us in January, you will need to pay half the RSCDS membership fee in addition to the Winter sessional fee. Both sessional fees are due by the end of the first month of each session (Sept. and Jan.).

2. Drop in fees
This is an option for non-regular dancers:
You may elect to pay $8 for the week you come to class, plus $25 one time only for the annual RSCDS membership fee ($12.50 if you start in the Winter session.)

The sessional fee is a better deal if one is a regular (there are 15 Wednesdays in the Fall session and 21 in the Winter session). It also makes the Treasurers' lives easier and allows them to do more dancing (instead of collecting) on Wednesday evenings, since they would only have to collect twice a year.

Where the money goes:

The RSCDS fee is paid annually (set by the RSCDS and collected by the Branch). The RSCDS uses this money to promote Scottish Country Dancing, research dances, publish materials and so on. Once one is a member of the RSCDS the doors of all the Society's branches are open.

The Branch levies additional fees to pay for the rental of Mackenzie Hall, supplies for the refreshment break, postage, purchase of music CDs, purchase and maintenance of music equipment, and so on.
